Deborah Howard
Deborah Howard is a Cape Cod painter whose atmospheric landscapes explore the ever-changing relationship between light, weather, memory, and place. She draws continual inspiration from its shifting marshes, tidal flats, and coastline, but her paintings move beyond traditional landscape, capturing not only what is seen, but also the emotional experience of a place.
Howard's process begins with black-and-white line drawings, notes on color, and observations recorded in sketchbooks. Working intuitively, she builds each painting through layers, allowing traces of earlier marks to emerge beneath the surface. This balance of revealing and obscuring creates quiet, evocative compositions that reflect the depth and transience of the natural world.
Howard earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of Massachusetts and continued her studies in the graduate program at the MassArt. She has exhibited extensively in Boston and New York.
